Steelband: From Oil Drum to Musical Instrument
A Digital Exhibition
This project explores the formative years (1930s - 1980) of the steelband movement in Trinidad and Tobago. Currently a work in progress, the digital exhibition will organize audio clips and photographs in a manner that will give historical insights into the social significance of the birth of this musical instrument in the twin island nation of Trinidad and Tobago and its cultural influence on the wider Caribbean region and entry onto the international stage.
This is a collaborative project that is being co-curated with Dr. David V. Trotman (York University). The project would not be possible without those steelband members who very generously contributed photographs and were willing to be interviewed for the historical record.
